Singapur – LeVeL33
In 2010, Salm received an extraordinary request to build a brewery on the roof of a skyscraper in Singapore. After thorough planning and cooperation with the local authorities, an adapted SALM brewery was lifted onto the roof in a spectacular operation and installed within a few weeks. In December 2010, LeVeL33, the highest urban brewery in the world, opened as a trendy restaurant with a breathtaking view of Marina Bay and an annual beer production of about 1000 hl.
The highest urban brewery in the world - LeVeL33 in Singapore
At the beginning of 2010, Dr. Martin Bém from Singapore called with a unique question: could a brewery be built on the roof of a skyscraper? There wasn’t much time to think it over, as other interested parties were also eyeing these rooftop spaces. Once it was clarified that the building had a backbone (the lift shafts) made of reinforced concrete, the project was deemed feasible. However, the condition was that all equipment had to be placed as close to the backbone as possible, and floor reinforcements had to be added for the brewhouse and large UNI tanks.
Unlike in Europe, the authorities in Singapore were very supportive, and just a few months later, an adapted version of a SALM brewery was shipped to Singapore.
One week after the containers arrived, the customs clearance was completed. Meanwhile, a dismantlable special crane was set up on the roof of the skyscraper, several glass elements were removed, and the construction site was made ready. The entire lifting process was planned in Vienna, with all components marked with sequential numbers.
The film-worthy action of lifting the entire brewery to the top took only a day. Three weeks later, the installation of the brewery was complete, and three months after that, the restaurant was ready. Thus, in December 2010, the world’s highest urban brewery was opened.
LeVeL33 is not your typical pub brewery. The breathtaking view from the open terrace on the 33rd floor, overlooking Marina Bay, adds a trendy and fancy vibe, attracting a more sophisticated crowd where a curated wine selection can also be expected. Although the brewery is capable of producing up to 2000 hl with a single beer type, it currently produces around 1000 hl with four to five different beer varieties, perfectly meeting the requirements.
